Overview

Talon Defense seeks a Data Scientist specializing in Scoring & Calibration to develop and improve predictive models and scoring methods for complex data-driven applications. As part of a larger team of data scientists, engineers, and technical stakeholders, this role will translate analytical findings into reliable capabilities that support prioritization and decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop baseline and machine learning approaches for prediction, relevance scoring, and prioritization
  • Explore data quality, class imbalance, and factors affecting model performance
  • Calibrate model confidence estimates and assess threshold tradeoffs against application requirements
  • Conduct error analysis, sensitivity analysis, and comparisons across modeling approaches
  • Design methods for handling uncertainty and incorporating human review where appropriate
  • Collaborate with engineers to integrate models into applications and establish performance monitoring
  • Work with independent evaluation personnel to support objective assessment of model quality
  • Document model assumptions, methods, limitations, and findings for technical and nontechnical audiences

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, certifications, or military technical training
  • Experience applying ML to real operational data with imbalanced classes or unequal error costs
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyTorch, or comparable tools
  • Experience with probability calibration, threshold selection, and precision–recall tradeoffs
  • Strong applied statistics skills, including experimental analysis and uncertainty assessment
  • Experience conducting error and sensitivity analysis and communicating results to nontechnical stakeholders
  • Ability to translate analytic results into useful scoring and human review workflows
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary technical team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience deploying and monitoring scoring models in production
  • Experience with human-in-the-loop systems, selective prediction, or risk-based triage
  • Experience with noisy, incomplete, or multi-source person-centric datasets
  • Experience supporting enterprise applications with demanding model reliability requirements

Compensation

$160,000 - $190,000 per year

Salary offered will depend on numerous qualifying factors such as clearance, degree and the years and depth of applicable experience.

Security Clearance

An active Secret security clearance is required before starting work. Interim Secret determinations are acceptable. Top Secret clearance is preferred. Candidates must meet applicable U.S. person requirements and maintain the required clearance throughout employment.
